About Organisation
The gods Mayon (Vishnu) presiding deity for Mullai land (forests), Seyon (Murugan alias Subramaniar) presiding deity for Kurunji land (Hills), Vendan (Indran) presiding deity for Marutham land (Plain), and Varuna (Varuna) presiding deity for Mullai land (Sea) are worshipped, according to the ancient Tamil work The Department was established as a result of this to streamline the administration of temples, which serve as emblems of our cultural legacy and historical repository. Even under the East India Company's reign, the temples were under the supervision and control of the government. Since ancient times, Hindu temples have had thousands of acres of land. Complaints about the mismanagement of these temples were heard even during the tenure of the East India Company. The general population complained to the rulers and the East India Company at the time. Meanwhile, the Madras regulation of 1817 came into effect. This Act established a system for determining whether temple donations and endowments were appropriately used or misappropriated for the benefit of private individuals. The Board was given authority to carry out its task. Thousands of temples were brought under government authority as a result of this. The East India Company's administration of the Indian government was directly passed to the British crown in 1858. The British government needed to gain the people's trust and diminish their hostility. As a result, the British government promised not to interfere in religious matters. As a result, those in charge of the temples and their properties can continue to enjoy them without restriction. Despite a great number of complaints, the British government remained far from the temple management because they could not comprehend the complexities of Indian society and the temple activities that were intertwined with it. At the same time, residents continued to file complaints about misuse of expensive assets like icons, jewelry, and other valuables, as well as property invasion. When Thiru. Rama Raya Ningar, the Raja of Panagal, became the Chief Minister of the Madras Presidency, he attempted to put all of the temples under government administration. In 1922, he suggested that the "Hindu Paripalanam" Act be passed. He presented the complexities of the proposed bill to Lord Irwin, the Viceroy at the time, and received his consent. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board was established in 1927. The Board was given the authority to govern and supervise the temple's management. Similarly, the Board was given the authority to designate administrators to temples for appropriate administration. Following that, in 1940, a special officer was appointed to streamline the Board's administration. In 1942, a non-official group chaired by a former High Court Judge proposed that the Government take over administration directly instead of the Board. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act of 1951 was passed after it was adopted. Several adjustments were made, and the government took over temple administration. The Act XXII of 1959 went into effect on January 1, 1960, after several detailed amendments were made. The Administration of Temples was constituted as a separate Government Department as a result of this Act.
