About Organisation

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) began in 1868 with the founding of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras, Tamil Nadu, which was later shifted to Coimbatore. It was connected with Madras University in 1920. TNAU gained complete responsibility for Agricultural Education and Research and provided research products to the State Agricultural Department. The Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, was the only Agricultural Education Institute in South India till 1946. It was designated as a Post-graduate Centre for Masters and Doctoral degrees in 1958. Madurai's Agricultural College and Research Institute were founded in 1965. When the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was founded in 1971, these two colleges comprised the nucleus. Separate B.Sc. (Horticulture) and B.E. (Agriculture) degree programs were established in 1972. Horticulture was created as a distinct faculty in 1979. The Madurai campus began offering a B.Sc. (Home Science) degree in 1980. The third Agricultural College was established in Killikulam in 1984, the fourth in Kumulur (Trichy) in 1989, and the fifth in Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute in Navalur Kuttappattu (Trichy) in 1992. Coimbatore began offering a B.Sc. (Forestry) degree in 1985. Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam, offers a B.Sc. (Horticulture) degree program, whereas Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam, offers a B.Sc. (Forestry) degree program. In order to keep up with technical advancements, the B.E.(Agriculture) program at Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Kumulur, Trichy, was renamed B.Tech.(Agricultural Engineering) in the academic year 2002-2003. Home Science College and Research Institute, Agricultural College Campus, Madurai, offers a B.Sc. (Home Science) degree program. The Government of Pondichery runs the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal, which is an affiliated institute of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and offers a B.Sc. (Agriculture) education. Aside from these academic institutes, the University presently offers research programs at over 32 sites around Tamil Nadu, with over 1200 scientists and teaching professionals.
