About Organisation
The creation of Madras University was sparked by a public petition dated 11-11-1839. The University Board was established in January 1840, with Mr. George Norton as its President. After a 14-year hiatus, the Government of India created a systematic educational program for India in 1854, and the University was formed on September 5, 1857, by an Act of the Legislative Council of India. The university was structured along the London University paradigm. Madras University is the mother of practically all of South India's historic universities. In recent years, the University's authority has been limited to three districts in Tamil Nadu. This is due to the development of several universities around the state, as well as the delineation of university boundaries. This university has been expanding its teaching and research operations while developing from strength to strength.
